The Journalists Association “Novomedia” 

"The transformation of media returns the transformation of nation"

 

The Novomedia Association is the all-Ukrainian non-governmental journalistic organization. It was founded in 2004 on the initiative of journalist Ruslan Kukharchuk. The Association unites Christian journalists and other creative stuff of different media in two common ways: spiritual unity and professional interests.

For today, Novomedia  Association  includes about 200 members from secular and Christian media and has representatives in the majority of regions of Ukraine. There are also members of the community in Russian Federation, USA and Canada.


Review of the activities of The Novomedia Association in 2017

On January 31, members of The Novomedia Association  and representatives of the Christian Evangelical mass media visited the Israeli Embassy in Ukraine. A meeting was held with Deputy Ambassador Emile Ben-Naftali and First Secretary and Head of the Political Department of the Reut Shapir Ben-Naftali Embassy. Earlier in December 2016, a group of Ukrainian Christian media journalists visited the Holy Land as part of the Novomedia Tour.


On February 4, the tenth school "New Journalist" started. This time among students were lawyers, economists, businessmen, students of philological faculties, operator, doctor. During two months students have listened to over 25 key topics. At the end of their studies, they passed an exam of the material and received certificates of successful completion of the School. Churches and religious organizations purposely delegate their representatives to improve the quality of their media departments.


On February 9, the President of The Novomedia Association Ruslan Kukharchuk joined the Public Council under the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting. This is the third cadence of The Novomedia Association in this representative body. Being in this collective body, the Association takes part in the public control of the information space of Ukraine. The subject of monitoring is the observance by the media of the standards of professional and Christian ethics.


On March 7, Ruslan Kukharchuk the President of The Novomedia Association held a master class on "Internet journalism" at the Kyiv International University. Students of the 1st and 2nd courses talked about Internet resources, separated journalism from blogging. They also were given a new media profile textbook "New Journalist".


On March 16, President of The Novomedia Association Ruslan Kukharchuk held a lecture at Taras Shevchenko National University in Kyiv. At the lecture there were about 30 students of the third course of the Institute of Journalism, specializing in Advertising and Public Relations.

On March 22, The Novomedia Association held a round table "How to realize the interests of the believer's audience in the system of Public Broadcasting". The discussion was held by leading journalists, representatives of media non-governmental organizations, as well as representatives of churches from various Christian denominations. Participants of the round table expressed their proposals on the mission of the Public Broadcasting in terms of meeting the information needs of the believer's audience. As a result of the discussion, a corresponding Resolution was adopted with a proposal to approve amendments to the law and to include in the Supervisory Board of the National Public Broadcasting Organization of Ukraine an authorized representative from churches and various denominations.


From March 30 to April 1, the organization held a large-scale spring media conference "Television, Radio, Social Media and PR" - for churches, Christian organizations and religious media. Among 170 participants from 4 countries - journalists, television, PR, bloggers, broadcasters, press officers. Speakers of Media Conferences - Professionals from America and Ukraine: Ronald Harris, President and Founder of MEDIAllianceInternational, Ruslan Kukharchuk, President of The Novomedia Association, journalist, media manager, TV presenter, Lee En  Jackson, Marketing Director at Ambassador Advertising Agency, Garry Longenecker and John McKinone , responsible for media production at In Touch Ministries, Bernie McPartlend, Chief Production Director and Deputy Program Director of Christian Radio KCBI in Dallas, JanaKucherenko, marketer, journalist, expert in PR-technologies, Alex Fishman, editor of ieshua.org, messianic community minister.


In April and May, The Novomedia Association held an information campaign to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Christian Protestant Reformation (R500). Among other things, video clips are recorded with media workers, who talk about their faith and understanding of the Reformation.

On May 12, President of The Novomedia Association Ruslan Kukharchuk visited Khmelnitsky. The theme of his speeches is the development of journalism, standards and eternal values in the media profession. Several performances on local TV channels were devoted to the protection of family values in Ukraine. Also, the head The Novomedia Association had meetings with journalists of the key media of the city and pupils of the children's TV agency. On Channel 33 there was a broadcast where teens were as moderators, while Ruslan Kucharchuk gave practical advice on professional development and value orientations for young media specialists.


On May 25, The Journalists Association “Novomedia”  became a new member of the Public Council under the Ministry of Information Policy. Being at this collective body, the Association takes part in the public control of the information space of Ukraine. As with the public council of the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting, the subject of monitoring is also the observance by the media of the standards of professional and Christian ethics.


In August, September and October, there was a dynamic preparation for the annual large-scale journalistic event in Kyiv, the International Novomedia Forum. This is the main annual event of the organization. In 2017, the slogan of the event was "Reformation of mass communication" - on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Christian Protestant Reformation. The Organizing Committee consisted of 30 people. As part of the preparations for the event, a large-scale work was done on informing editorial staff, students of journalistic faculties, information departments of churches. On the eve of the event, the official bulletin of the Novomedia Forum 2017 was printed in the quantity of one thousand copies. It contained all the key information about the event, and also helped to orientate in the format of the event and decide on which session to go.


On September 21, President of The Journalists Association “Novomedia”  Ruslan Kukharchuk visited Kharkiv. At the invitation of the chief editor of the news section of the OTB channel Olga Shevchenko, the broadcast of the program "Theme of the day" was recorded. The domestic political situation in Ukraine was discussed in it. The problems of Ukrainian journalism and themes which are consciously ignored in the media – such as faith, Christian values and religious life - were discussed. Particular attention in the conversation paid to a new mass street family movement that has arisen in the last two years. Within the visit to Kharkiv, Ruslan Kucharchuk met with students of the Faculty of Social Communications of the Kharkiv State Academy of Culture. All the time was devoted for the answers to the questions about Novomedia, religious issues in secular media andthe role of faith in the life of the journalist.

On October 10, Ruslan Kukharchuk, President of The Novomedia Association, addressed students of the Institute of Journalism of the Shevchenko National University in Kyiv. During the speech, the current issues of coverage of religious issues in mass media were analyzed. It also became clear that one of these problems is the lack of understanding of religious aspects in social, political and economic processes, as well as the silencing of the role of faith and Christian communities in social work.


On October 15-18, the Christian Media Summit was held in Jerusalem. More than 130 journalists and managers of media companies from 40 countries and all continents became participants. They talked about Israel as the only democracy in the Middle East, the nature of militant anti-Jewish Islam, the Palestinian agenda, the key threat from Iran, the coverage of the Israeli theme in the world's media, and much more. On this remarkable event Ukraine was represented by the President of The Journalists Association “Novomedia”  Ruslan Kukharchuk. He met with the head of the press office of the Israeli Government Nitzan Chen in order to discuss further interaction with Ukrainian colleagues.


On October 23-25, the Second Leadership Media Summit in the US state of Texas was held. The aim was to study the experience of this community in serving through the tools of television, radio and print materials. At the event Ukraine was represented by President of The Novomedia Association  Ruslan Kukharchuk, the president of the CBN office in Ukraine Steve Weber, and also the broadcaster of Radio M Olesya Dmitrieva. The speakers were: Harry Chapman, Brent Taylor, Bob Lepine, Tom Maccabee, Don McMinn, Christine Coul, Raymond Harris, MEDIAllianceInternational president Ron Harris and Adam Wright, President of DBU.


On November 3-4 was held the main annual event - Novomedia Forum. The metropolitan complex Nivki-hall has taken over 350 journalists and mediaworkers from all over the country. The speakers were 30 leading specialists of all media types. Special guests at this time were a journalist and radio broadcaster from the BBC (London) Seva Novgorodsev, as well as a television and radio broadcaster from the United States (NBC, WFAA-TV) Melissa Harrison.


On November 4, within Novomedia Forum took place the ceremony of the Novomedia Awards. Seven laureates received statuettes for the competent coverage in national media themes of faith, family matters and eternal Christian values. Among them: Oleg Havrysh and Andriy Yukhymenko, Khrystyna Havrysh, Alla Kotlyar, Ukrinform Agency and Lana Samokhvalova, Anastasia Evdokimova, Olga Skorokhod, Yevgeny Savvateyev and Bohdan Kinaschuk.


On November 9, Ruslan Kukharchuk gave a lecture for the students of the Kharkiv State Academy of Culture. It was about the wrong coverage of religious issues in the media. The problems of the frank silencing of the role of faith and Christian communities in social work, the lack of understanding of religious aspects in social, political and economic processes were outlined. In the end, students raised a lot of questions about why there are such anti-church bias in the Ukrainian media.


On November 20, President of The Novomedia Association  Ruslan Kukharchuk conducted a lecture for the students of Ivan Ogienko National University in Kamyanets-Podilsky. The topics of the speech concerned changes of standards in political journalism in Ukraine as well as trends of foreign media. The conversation touched the problem of coverage in modern mass media of social, political and religious themes. Students set about 20 questions on different aspects of journalism: political journalism, standards of impartiality, live work, religious subjects, the difference between journalism and PR, asked about nuances of organizing the annual Novomedia Forum.


On November 25, ended the eleventh recruitment at the School ‘’New Journalist’’. Diligent students received certificates confirming journalist's skills and ability to perform professional duties in print and electronic media. A pleasant surprise was the gift in the form of the second edition of the book "New Journalist" by the President of The Novomedia Association  Ruslan Kukharchuk.


On December 2, there was training for churches and Christian organizations in Kharkiv. It was about how to master new tools for informational service and effective mass communication. 28 participants attended the training course "Information Department of the Church and the Christian Organization: Creation and Development". All of them represented different churches and Christian organizations in Kharkiv. The speaker was Ruslan Kukharchuk - the President of The Journalists Association “Novomedia”  Ruslan Kukharchuk.


On December 6, in Kiev a thematic discussion on the so-called "hate speech" was held. The organizer of the round table was The Novomedia Association. The issues of protection of freedom of speech and freedom of religion were considered in the context of the introduction of the concept of "language of hostility" in the information and legal field of Ukraine. During the discussion, the content of the concept of "language of hostility" was clarified on the example of the legislation of European countries, identified the positive effects and possible threats, and also sought a balanced model of adaptation of Ukrainian legislation to the international one.


On December 11, the President of The Journalists Association “Novomedia”  Ruslan Kukharchuk visited Mikhail Kotsiubynsky State Pedagogical University in Vinnitsa . The lecture was about distorting the standards of journalism. New trends emerging in the world were outlined. Ukrainian realities of faith in secular media were analyzed. The topics of the speech addressed the challenges in the media sector. Also, the students of the Department of Journalism, Advertising, and Public Relations considered the topic of genre diversity, which broadened their general view of journalism as a whole.
